App categories: eleven shelves, one standard
Every app we review sits on one of eleven shelves, from Travel & Holidays to Work & Productivity, and each is judged on the same checklist. Start with travel, where flights, hotel deals and trip planners compete hardest.

Only Travel & Holidays has its own page in this prototype; the other tiles show the counts and copy a shelf page would carry.
How we pick
Every app on a shelf gets the same checklist. I use it for at least a few days on a real device, signed in, with notifications on. Then I ask four questions: does it do the main job well on a phone or PC, not just on the web; are the costs clear before you pay, including subscriptions and booking fees; what does it ask for, from permissions to account data, and is that reasonable for what it does; and what happens when something goes wrong, from cancellations to support. Store facts such as rating, installs, version and price are read from the official listing on the date shown and never typed by hand. Shelves only get a page once they hold enough apps to compare, and apps from finance, dating and gambling are not covered at all. We don't take payment for placement, and the order of a shelf is our opinion, not an advertisement.
